A question is often asked as to the difference between CUMBRIA and CUMBERLAND.   In local government reorganisation of 1974 CUMBRIA was formed from Cumberland, Westmorland, the Furness area of Lancashire and a small part of Yorkshire.    Records from before this date are listed as belonging to the appropriate ancient county.
